Hi,
I think professional websites are made up of a few things. The navigation is one of the most important elements of your website especially if you are looking to sell something. Legible fonts are key. Colors are a very important part of your website if you are trying to reach a vast audience as apposed to maybe a certain type of surfer, i.e. Teenage gammer, Middle-age house wife.
I think the navigation on any website should be the first thing s surfer notices next to the logo. The navigation must be legible and easy to use. If you had something like a flash site that was more about wowing the surfer than it is about getting your product or service out there than a funky or more creative nav would probably make more sense.
The most popular fonts used on the web, I think, are Arial and Verdana. We actually were talking about that a couple days ago on the forums here. I happen to prefer Arial as a font. Just surfing the web these years I have noticed a few things about the usage of fonts on websites. Most sites like gamer sites usually use a small verdana in content. Most say; PC sites use either one of these fonts, but usually at something like 12 or 11px at the smallest. Most headers are usually bold and are colored. The content text is usually only different from black if your background is something other than white.
I think any professional website's background color should be mostly or all white. The most important color of your website has to be the color of the background in my opinion. We don’t want a black background on a website trying to sell computers or webspace.
I can’t say that this is the formula, but just from what I have seen as more effective as far as sites that I have purchased any sort of product or service from. Something like the colors or fonts used on a website to me are things that have to be appropriately matching the content of the website. Being original and creative is not something im saying you shouldn’t always be.
