Bear, my sound hasn't worked for a while now, and I was wondering if downloading a free 'generic' driver from a site such as filehippo would work. Could one be downloaded which would 'overlay' my non-functional Windows drivers, or would it install itself in another location? Some of the ones I see on that site are ATI Catalyst Drivers 6.2, and another one called DirectX 9.0c which is tagged Feb '06. Would one of these types of drivers be able to hook-up with the sound-producing 'sections' of the 'puter, or is this thing impossible right from the start? ;)
If we knew the sound card, we could find proper drivers. Have you tried telling Windows where to find the existing drivers, in case it lost sight of them?
If you go to the device manager in Windows, and look for the sound card, is there a yellow exclamation point next to it? If not, it could be something other than drivers.
[ Right click 'my computer', choose 'properties', click 'hardware' tab, then find the 'device manager' button. Look for 'sound video and game controllers'. Expand this...]

Bear, When 'sound video and game controllers' is expanded it lists:
---Audio codecs
---Legacy audio drivers
---Legacy Video capture devices
---Media control devices
---Standard game port
---Video codecs
Each one of these @#$%^&* things says it is working properly when I double-click on it. The Legacy audio driver says it is standard system device.
If I right-click on the Leagacy audio driver, it goes to the same update wizard as below.
Above the sound/video/game controller speaker-icon is one labeled "Other devices"
and IT has a large yellow question mark next to it. Then beneath it, subfolder-style
is something labeled "Multimedia Audio Controller. When I expand it it tells me:
device type other devices
manufacturer unknown
location PCI bus 0, device 17, function 5
Since reinstalling windows the last time, I've installed no other music or other types of programs, except Nero.
It then says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"
"To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver"
But when I do THAT, it assumes I have the driver-software on a CD.
**Brain-storm...I found the CD from Lemel that came with the motherboard, and it lists having: chipset, graphics, audio, USB, and Network drivers as well as "Tools".... hmmmm.... I'll play with this tonight and let you know.
Gotta go, the wife's got dinner on. ;)
:) :)

Lord, can that woman cook!! :P My waistline is history. I'll have to sign off for tonight, veg out on the sofa with her, give her a back-rub, ( and let her give me a foot-massage... ;) )
Talk to you tomorrow.....:D Thanks for everything, Bear!! :D

Let me know how you make out with the driver disk, that sounds like it may have the proper files on it to me.

love the new avatar
Yeah...I call him the lil' blue dude...I use him on another site, but for some reason it took me a while to actually track down his "address" so I could use him here...
I'm in the middle of recruiting (AGAIN!!!:tongue1: :tongue1: :tongue1:) some new teachers for the upcoming 'school year'. We're sync'ed with the Korean school-year which runs Mar 1 to Feb 28...you wouldn't BELIEVE some of the responses I get. I've been busy last night and tonight with the responses to our ad, and I'll try to get the drivers installed soon, like tonight.
It's funny...all the years I spent in bar-bands have conditioned me to think of a 'driver' as a hardware device, the actual diaphram-thingy that drives the sound out of a (usually) horn-end of a multi-speaker PA system. It's a mental leap to think of it as a software thing. sighhhh... Well, us dinosaurs gotta go sometime...guess I'll just tuck in my horns, lift the ol' spiked tail and wander back to my cave...
"They call me Baby Driver and once upon a pair of wheels,
I hit the road and I'm gone, what's my number? I wonder how your engines feel, ba ba ba ba." ;)

Me, too, big guy!! I really missed pinball, and each time I play it I'm amazed at the realism of the programming. It's like when I look at one of the massive cathedrals in my hometown, and speculate on the fact that every single stone was calculated first, then cut by hand...
I'll probably try to find some more of the little space-ship shoot-'em-up games I enjoy so much from gamehippo.com..
It's just no fun killing aliens without hearing the explosions!! :P
