I am using Win98, and it has got 6GB space totally.

Actually the HDD should be 40GB (I see this info. from the dark black screen which always shows some of the PC config. during startup),
there are 34GB space left, which may have not been formatted for use; this is the reason why my HDD is always 6GB large, even though the man (PC repairer) has claimed it to be a 40GB one!

Of course, there is built-in tool in XP for formatting the unformatted parts of HDD; but, how, how can this be done in Win98?

If the drive has unformatted space (none too sure about this being possible), you might be stuck unless using a third party app like PartitionMagic. There is no reliable way to create or format a partition (in use) in Win98 natively without destroying existing data.

Do you mean that I have to format the whole HDD so as to made new partitions?
Is there any method for me to retain the old data in the HDD while I am making new partition?

The only way I know of to create a new partition on Win98 (without destroying existing ones) is to use Partition Magic or similar software. In Win98, you can't natively create new, resize old or any useful operations without starting fresh....deleting all previous partitions and all that fun stuff.
If there is a way, I've never found it or heard of it. Sorry.
