View Full Version : do i really need a chipset fan
do i really need a chipset fan?? wont a heatsink work fine ??
Depends on the CPU. Newer CPUs run quite hot (the faster the chip, the hotter it gets, typically), especially AMDs, and without the fan, there just isn't enough air moving across the heatsink to draw the heat away from the processor. You might get away without a fan, *if* the heatsink is a really good one, the case has enough air being moved across the sink and you're not overclocking.
If you're installing it yourself, make very sure you use the proper amount of heatsink compound during install. More than a dab is not better, and might allow heat to transfer past the sink...and bad things happen really fast...
ok so if i have a fan ready and do i have to use therma gel?? and if so how do i apply it
You need to have something in between the processor and heatsink, in order to make sure you have good contact. If there are imperfections (which you probably can't see with the naked eye), they will not contact each other perfectly, and could cause hotspots.
You should read the instructions that came with the thermal gel or tape (or with the CPU, if it came with it). For gel, typically it takes a small amount, in the center of the heatsink before you mate the 2 parts.
That doesn't give me much to go on, Wera. What aren't you understanding?
i mean i dont understad anything at all it came with a
heatsink and i got what i think to be a 45mm fan so does the fam go on top of the heatsink with therma gel or what i dont quite get it edit oh and btw nice smiles are they new :) :hammer3: :hammer3: i have wanted to do that for a vverty long time :p
I can't say without seeing what you have. Whatever sits directly on top of the CPU needs the gel/tape. Some heatsinks have "fins" as well as a fan, so maybe both. Surely there were instructions with the item when you bought it?

ehh no.. i got this little fan out of a junked computer i have here and i want to put it on top of the heatsink btw i got the junked one for free
That doesn't sound like a terribly good idea, unless it was specifically designed to accept one. CPUs are sort of fragile, and if you press too hard or screw up the airflow over the fins, it could kill the chip. It happens in a heartbeat, too, so there would probably be no warning.
Scary.

0oh ..s>c>a>r>y a computer guys worst nighitmare anyways so i need to buy some therma gel and take the heatsink off of the chipset huh but there should be a metal thing under the heatsinck righit and i put the therma gel on that righit??
oh btw how and how much thermal gel do i put on can i see a pic on how os here?
Have a look at the "how to" from Arctic Silver, a good brand of thermal paste (gel).

It has lots of images, good descriptions and instructions on removing the old material as well. Doesn't get any better than that. :D

that does help a hole lot bear but one thing "DO NOT REMOVE THE HEATSINK FROM THE CPU TO LOOK AT THE COMPOUND ONCE YOU HAVE MOUNTED THE HEATSINK. This will introduce air into the interface layer and require a fresh application." now uhh ia fan will do the same thing introduce air so how do i put a fan on it if it will introduce air... im really confuzed  :poke:
No, they're saying that once you apply the material and add the heatsink, don't remove it to look at it. If you do, the seal might not be good any longer, and you'd need to reapply the paste and heatsink.
The interface layer is the gap between the CPU and the heatsink, where you put the paste.
so uhh if i see the paste thourh the fan is that bad than? im talking about this heatsink on my mother board next to the cpu and on the pics it was just a little motherboard see it looked like a cpu to me i dont know what im talking about now
The item that is supposed to remove heat must contact the paste on one side, and the CPU directly on the other. There can be no gaps, and no places where you can see the paste "through" the fan, etc. I'm guessing this fan was not from a heatsink originally, or it was from one that was designed to operate on top of some form of bladed heatsink.
To use this would probably allow you about 15 seconds of operation before the CPU killed itself with heat, I'm guessing. You might want to rethink this. ;)

oh ok umm well actsualey i got this fan of of a prosesor cele i dunno i think i will rethink this ok but what about putting it on top of the heatsink :poke:
...perhaps if you were to strap a few ice cubes on it... :shakehead ;)

ahh ok so can i just use it as a case fan along with my other on e err will be ones soon :poke:
